J.S. Bach – Air on a G String
Any Brits who
remember the 70’s will forever associate this
piece of music with the TV commercial for Hamlet cigars. It’s
hard to forget
the image of the golfer in the bunker hacking away a dozen times
without
hitting the ball before finally kicking back and lighting up a Hamlet
as the
opening bars of this piece strike up.
Originally it was
just called ‘Air’ by its composer, J.S.
Bach, but some years after his death a violinist, (who’s name
escapes me),
transposed it from the original key of D into the key of C, where he
could play
the whole tune just on one string of his violin (the G string, in case
you were
wondering!)
We have also put it
in C, and although we can’t play it on
just one string of the guitar, we’ve tried to make the
arrangement as playable
as possible. That doesn’t mean it’s a
beginner’s piece, but with a little
practise anyone who’s been playing a while will be able to
get it down.
